In 1787, her career as schoolteacher and governess at an end, Mary Wollstonecraft became part of the intellectual group surrounding the radical publisher Joseph Johnson. Johnson put her to work, and she produced for him a succession of translations and improving books for children. Original Stories, first published in 1788, consists of a series of severely moral tales. The second edition used here is illustrated by William Blake, also a member of the Johnson circle.
