MARY SHELLEY & PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY

History of a Six Weeks' Tour 1817

Mary Shelley's first published work describes the brief foray across devastated France made by Shelley, Mary and Claire Clairmont in 1814. With it are letters by Shelley dating from their 1816 summer in Switzerland (when they met Byron and Frankenstein was conceived), together with two written by Mary on their return to London. Finally, there is the earliest text of one of Shelley's greatest poems, Mont Blanc.

About nine o’clock we departed [from Charenton]. We were clad in black silk. I rode on the mule, which carried also our portmanteau; S*** and C*** followed, bringing a small basket of provisions. At about one we arrived at Gros Bois, where, under the shade of trees, we ate our bread and fruit, and drank our wine, thinking of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
