SELWYN IMAGE

Poems and Carols 1894

bound with
HERBERT HORNE

Diversi colores 1891

These two rare and delicate books, designed and printed in the same format at the Chiswick Press, show a craftsman’s grasp of form and an attractive directness of manner. Selwyn Image (1849-1930) was artist, scholar, designer (stained glass, books, type) and latterly Professor of Fine Art at Oxford. Herbert Horne (1864-1916) was one of the founders of modern art history. Both were involved with Arthur Mackmurdo in the Century Guild and its periodical The Century Guild Hobby Horse, playing a central part in the Arts and Crafts movement.

I did not raise mine eyes to hers,
Although I knew she passed me near:
I said ‘Her shadow round me stirs;
It is enough, that she is here,
And that, for once, my way is hers.’

I did not look upon her face,
I knew with whom her heart confers;
For more, that moment had no place:
I did not raise mine eyes to hers,
I did not look upon her face.
